Remote Connections

Pro

Remote connections need a DevDb Pro license.

Add a connection

  1. Open the DevDb panel.
  2. Under Remote Connections, click Add.
  3. Select a connection type:
TypeUse it for
SSH TunnelMySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL on a server that you reach over SSH
Direct ConnectionMySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL with a public address, for example Supabase, Neon, PlanetScale, Render or Railway
MongoDBMongoDB, including MongoDB Atlas
Redis / ValkeySee Redis / Valkey
ClickHouseSee ClickHouse
Cloudflare D1See Cloudflare D1
Turso / libSQLSee Turso / libSQL
DynamoDBSee DynamoDB
  1. Enter the details, then click Test to check the connection.
  2. Click Connect. DevDb saves the connection and connects. Later, click the connection in the list to connect again.

DevDb keeps passwords and connection strings in the secret storage of your editor. It does not write them to settings.json.

Direct connections

Use Direct Connection for MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL with a public address.

FieldDescription
Database EngineMySQL / MariaDB, or PostgreSQL
Host, PortServer address. Defaults: 3306 (MySQL), 5432 (PostgreSQL).
Username, PasswordDatabase user
Database NameDatabase to open

To fill all fields at once, paste a connection string, for example postgres://user:pass@host:5432/db.

TLS

Select Enable SSL/TLS for cloud databases. DevDb selects it for you when you paste a connection string with sslmode=require, sslmode=verify-ca, sslmode=verify-full or ssl=true, or with a known cloud host (for example neon.tech or supabase).

DevDb verifies the certificate of the server by default.

Self-signed certificates

If the server uses a self-signed certificate or a private certificate authority, select Allow self-signed certificate. DevDb then does not verify the certificate.

DANGER

Use this option only on networks that you trust. Without certificate verification, a third party can read or change your data.

Supabase cloud

Use Direct Connection with the details from Settings > Database in the Supabase dashboard:

FieldValue
Hostdb.<project-ref>.supabase.co
Port5432
Usernamepostgres
Database Namepostgres

Use the direct connection details, not the connection pooler. If the connection is refused, look at Settings > Database > Network Bans.

AWS RDS

Use Direct Connection with the endpoint and port from the Connectivity & security tab of your instance in the RDS console. This works for RDS MySQL, RDS MariaDB, RDS PostgreSQL and Aurora.

If the instance is not publicly accessible, use an SSH tunnel through a host in the same VPC.

For Neon, see Neon.

SSH tunnels

Use SSH Tunnel to connect to MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL through an SSH server.

FieldDescription
SSH host, port, usernameThe SSH server
Private Key PathFor example ~/.ssh/id_ed25519. Recommended.
Database host, portThe address of the database on the SSH server. Defaults: 127.0.0.1:3306 (MySQL) or 127.0.0.1:5432 (PostgreSQL).
Username, Password, Database NameDatabase user and database

Authentication

  • Private key (recommended). If the key has a passphrase, DevDb asks for it when you connect.
  • Password. If you do not give a private key, DevDb asks for the SSH password.

Host key trust

DevDb checks the host key of the SSH server against ~/.ssh/known_hosts.

  • If the key is in known_hosts, DevDb connects.
  • If the host is not in known_hosts, DevDb shows the SHA256 fingerprint of the key. Compare it with the key of the server, then click Trust to connect. DevDb keeps the trusted fingerprint.
  • If the key changes after you trust it, DevDb does not connect. This can mean that the server key changed or that a third party intercepts the connection.

To see the fingerprint on the server, run:

bash
ssh-keygen -lf /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key.pub

Server requirements

  • AllowTcpForwarding must be yes or local in /etc/ssh/sshd_config.
  • The private key must have permission 600:
bash
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/id_ed25519

SSH server logs are in /var/log/auth.log (Debian, Ubuntu) or /var/log/secure (RHEL, CentOS).

SSH tunnels are available for MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL only.

MongoDB

Use MongoDB for MongoDB and Mongoose databases. DevDb reads a sample of each collection to show its fields.

A MongoDB database that zero-config detection finds is free, for example MONGODB_URI in .env, a Prisma schema or a mongo service in docker-compose. A MongoDB connection that you add here needs Pro.

Enter the details in one of two ways:

  • Fields: host, port (default 27017), username, password and database. DevDb authenticates against the admin database.
  • Connection String: a mongodb:// or mongodb+srv:// URI. To use a different authentication database, add ?authSource=<database> to the URI.

Troubleshooting:

  • authSource must be the database where the user was created. This is usually admin.
  • In a URI, URL-encode a username or password that contains special characters.

Redis / Valkey

See Redis / Valkey.

ClickHouse

See ClickHouse.

Edit or delete a connection

In the Remote Connections list, click the edit icon or the delete icon of the connection. When you edit a connection, click Save.
